See you on the water!

Learn to Sail

“There is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing, as simply messing about in boats."

A primary focus at Lake Quivira Yacht Club is teaching people how to sail, or how to sail better. We are fortunate to have among our members several experienced sailing instructors. These and other dedicated volunteers conduct sailing classes throughout the year for juniors and adults. The emphasis is on water safety, boat handling, race tactics and -- not incidentally -- fun!

The club owns and maintains a fleet of sailboats for training, as well as a utility craft for teaching support and safety. Onshore sessions are conducted under our LQYC Pavilion.

LQYC members and their immediate family have first priority in Training classes. We welcome and encourage non-members to participate based on availability.

For more information about sailing lessons, please email our Vice Commodore at ViceCommodore@lqyc.com.

Adult sailing lessons are offered 2 Sundays this summer.  Participants must be Yacht Club members prior to registering for a class.  Each class can accommodate up to 10 people.

This basic sailing course is designed for beginners with no sailing experience. The class begins at the Lake Quivira marina with instruction on safety and the theory of how sails work. The rest of the course follows the process of “going sailing”, and covers maintenance, rigging, launching, sailing upwind and downwind, starting and stopping, right-of-way, and docking. Each student then receives on the water training to solidify their skills.
